Baseball Wins 10th of the Season in 6-1 Defeat of Caldwell

LANTANA, Fla. - The University of New Haven baseball team won its tenth game of the 2010 season Thursday in a 6-1 win over Caldwell College. With the win the Chargers improve to 10-2 overall, while the Cougars fall to 4-8 with the loss.

The pitchers won the opening two innings Thursday, with neither team scoring until the third inning. The Chargers strung together five consecutive base runners and scored four runs in the top of the third inning. David Wirkus drove in the Chargers first run, while taking a walk with the bases loaded. Cory Carr then hit a single and drove in two more runs for UNH. Later in the inning, Kyle Donnelly hit a sacrifice fly and drove in the fourth run of the inning.

UNH added one in each of the next two innings, while freshman pitcher Frank Vilacha shutdown the Cougars offense through the seventh inning. He collected six strikeouts in his first start of 2010 and allowed only three hits and one walk.

Eric Peck stepped on the mound for the final two innings for UNH and gave up just one run, in the eighth inning, and led the Chargers to their eighth-straight victory.

Carr led the Chargers with three hits and two RBI's in five at-bats. Donnelly also recorded multiple hits and added a RBI.

The Cougars were held to just six hits in the game, but the Caldwell pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

The Chargers conclude their 2010 spring break trip to Florida tomorrow morning when they take on St. Michael's College. The game is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
