Baseball Beats St. Mike's and Completes Undefeated Florida Trip

LANTANA, Fla. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated Saint Michael's College 7-0 Friday morning as they completed a clean sweep of eight games this week in Florida. The Chargers improve to 11-2 on the season, while the Purple Knights fall to 1-6.

Freshman pitcher Peter Jay made his first collegiate start and threw an outstanding game for the Chargers. He tossed seven complete innings and allowed just three hits, while collecting nine strikeouts.

The Chargers' offense wasted no time scoring and put a run up on the board in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Tom Rombilus and Ryan Brockett opened the inning. Rombilus scored later in the inning to put UNH up 1-0.

The Chargers added another run in the third inning and again in the fifth inning. The Chargers sealed the victory with three runs in the eighth inning. Rombilus hit a one-run single to spark the Chargers' offense in the eighth. Cory Carr singled and drove in a pair of runs later in the inning to give the Chargers a 6-0 lead.

Mitch Rossi stepped onto the mound for the Chargers in the eighth inning and once again held the opponents scoreless through two innings. Stephen Clout added another RBI single in the top of the ninth inning which gave the Chargers a 7-0 lead.

Brockett, Rombilus, Carr, Clout, Kyle Pettoruto, Shane O'Connell and Jordan Kershaw each recorded multiple hits in the game. Kershaw led the team with three hits, while Rombilus led the team with two runs.

The Chargers are currently winners of nine-straight and open their Northeast-10 Conference schedule on Sunday. UNH travels to the College of St. Rose for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
