Chargers Up to No. 6 in AFCA Division II Coaches’ Poll

WACO, Texas – The University of New Haven football team has climbed to No. 6 in this week’s American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches’ Poll. The 4-0 Chargers were idle this past weekend but move up two spots after a Saturday that saw three top-10 teams fall to unranked opponents.

At No. 6 on the weekly ledger, New Haven is one slot shy of matching last season’s peak position of No. 5, attained on Nov. 14 following the completion of a 10-1 regular season with no losses against Division II competition.

The three major upsets of the week saw then-No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth fall to Saint Cloud State, former No. 6 California (Pa.) bested by West Chester and last week’s No. 9 Humboldt State dropped by Central Washington.

Defending National Champion Pittsburg State – idle last Saturday – maintained its No. 1 ranking and continues to receive 29 of 30 first-place votes. The other first-place tally once again went to No. 4 Winston-Salem State, which is also the only Super Region One team ranked ahead of the Chargers.

Other Super Region One teams appearing in the AFCA poll are a quartet of Pennsylvania teams: No. 7 Bloomsburg, co-No. 16 teams California and Shippensburg and No. 22 Indiana.

The Chargers were most recently ranked No. 9 in the D2Football.com Media Poll, which will be released on Tuesday.

New Haven returns to the gridiron on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. at Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium to meet Assumption. NewHavenChargers.com will present a live, high-definition broadcast of the action beginning at 12:30 p.m.
