Baseball Grabs 15-3 Win Over Molloy

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The University of New Haven baseball team defeated Molloy College 15-3 Wednesday afternoon on the campus of Lynn University. With the win the Chargers improve to 9-2 this season, while the Lions fall to 4-11 on the season.

The Lions wasted no time getting on the scoreboard Wednesday with a run in the top of the first inning. The Chargers answered in the bottom of the inning and took the lead for good with a two-RBI single by Kyle Donnelly. Donnelly started a 11-0 run for the Chargers who added runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Stephen Clout drove in Shane O'Connell on a double to left field in the fourth inning. He then scored on the next batter when Tom Rombilus drove a single up the middle of the field.

New Haven's half of the fifth inning earned six runs and gave the Chargers a 10-1 lead. Cory Carr started a string of three consecutive hits to open the fifth for UNH. After Kyle Pettoruto singled up the middle, Donnelly hit another RBI single, which scored Carr. O'Connell then advanced the runners with a well-executed sacrifice bunt. Jordan Kershaw drove in two more runs for the Chargers with another single up the middle, while advancing to second base on a wild pitch. Clout then singled and put the Chargers next run on third base. Ryan Brockett was next to the plate and hit a one-run sacrifice fly to center field. The runners then advanced on a wild pitch and David Wirkus brought home Rombilus on a single up the middle. In his second at-bat of the inning, Carr fouled out to first base.

Kershaw drove in Pettoruto to give the Chargers an 11-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Molloy scored two in the top of the seventh, followed by two from the Chargers in the bottom of the seventh. Two more runs from UNH in the eighth sealed the 15-3 win.

Donnelly led the Chargers with three RBI's on three hits. Kershaw added three RBI's and one run on two hits, while Clout scored three and drove in one run.

Mike Aquilino started the game for the Chargers on the mound. He threw six innings and allowed just six hits and one earned run. Freshman Peter Jay pitched the seventh inning and gave up two runs, while Eric Peck came in for the eighth inning and forced three fly outs. Kyle Befus closed for UNH and shutout any runs in the ninth.

The Chargers return to action tomorrow morning against Caldwell College. The game is set for 11 a.m. in Florida.
