Chargers to Host Play 4 Kay Cancer Event on Feb. 4

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven Department of Athletics will be holding its annual breast cancer awareness day on Saturday, February 4 at Charger Gymnasium. The 2012 Play 4 Kay® event, previously known as the Pink Zone, will mark the sixth year that UNH has hosted the event which has grown in each of the previous years.

Play 4 Kay® activities are planned the entire week leading up to the Chargers big doubleheader with Northeast-10 Conference foe Pace University. All fundraising efforts will go to support the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and a local organization to be determined.

"Push-Ups 4 Pink" will be a new contest in 2012 for UNH students which will give the winning team of three a $300 VISA giftcard. Co-ed teams of three can sign up at the Beckerman Recreation Center all week for an entry fee of $10 per person, which includes a 2012 Play 4 Kay® t-shirt and a shot at winning the $300 grand prize. Preliminaries will be held throughout the week of January 30 - February 3 at the Beckerman Recreation Center and the finals will take place on February 4 during halftime of the basketball games at Charger Gymnasium.

Throughout the week leading up to the Play 4 Kay® doubleheader students, faculty and fans can purchase their 2012 Play 4 Kay® t-shirts for a suggested donation of $10 or $5 for UNH students. T-shirts will be available for purchase at the Chargers home doubleheader on Wednesday, January 25 as well as in the Bartels Hall lobby at the Play 4 Kay® table during lunch and dinner hours from January 30 to February 3. If t-shirts remain on gameday, they will be available for purchase in the lobby of Charger Gymnasium.

Play 4 Kay® Naming Ribbons will also be available all week in Bartels Hall lobby and in all of the UNH residence hall for a suggested donation of $1. The naming ribbons will be hung around Charger Gymnasium on gameday. Purchase a ribbon, put your name on it and come to the Play 4 Kay® doubleheader to find your name on the wall of pink.

Fans are also encouraged to come dressed or painted in pink to the game. The UNH cheerleaders will be available in the lobby with face paint and body paint prior to the 1:30 p.m. tip-off.

The 2012 Play 4 Kay® event is part of the UNH Department of Athletics broader community engagement efforts, which seeks to help the surrounding towns and community organizations while providing opportunities for student-athletes, coaches and fans to give back to their communities.
