CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - With 26 total points, the University of New Haven women's outdoor track and field team finished in 14th place at the 2012 New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the campus of M.I.T. Friday and Saturday. The Chargers' 26 points were also good enough for third place among Division II teams at the championship.
Freshman
Tiara Mitchell (Westbury, N.Y./Old Westbury) recorded a distance of 12.23 meters in the triple jump and beat out teammate
Briana Conyers (Derby, Conn./Hill Regional Career) who placed second with a jump of 12.09 meters. Both marks moved the rookies up the NCAA Division II provisional qualifiers list, now standing at 15th and 23rd, respectively.
In other field events, senior
Calista Hutchinson (Adams, N.Y./South Jefferson Central) placed second in the high jump with a jump of 1.65 meters. In the hammer throw,
Shraya Manick (New Haven, Conn./Wilbur Cross) finished in 14th place with a toss of 45.42 meters.
Ivy Watts (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) finished in 13th place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.48 seconds.
Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) posted a time of 15-seconds flat in the 100-meter hurdles and placed 13th. The sophomore also competed in the 400-meter hurdles and finished in 13th place.
Mitchell and Conyers, along with Manick, now wait to see if the NCAA selects them for participation in the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championships this week. Mitchell and Conyers both hit provisional marks in the triple jump, while Manick hit the provisional mark in the hammer throw at the NE-10 Championship.
